About the Canadian Silver Dollar (pre-1968)

From 1935 to 1967 Canada's circulating dollar coin was struck in 80% silver and 20% copper, weighing 23.33 grams with 0.60 troy ounces of pure silver. From 1968 the Mint switched the dollar to pure nickel, which contains no silver at all — so the date on the coin decides its value. Pre-1968 silver dollars trade close to their melt value; worn coins are worth silver content only, while scarce dates and mint-state examples can carry a collector premium on top.

Buying or selling a Canadian Silver Dollar (pre-1968)?

Dealers in Canada typically sell silver bullion a few percent above melt value and buy it a few percent below. Popular coins like the Canadian Silver Dollar (pre-1968) often carry a slightly higher premium because they are easy to resell.
